LA PETITE PERLE

This project is a visual reflection on contemporary female sexuality in the age of technology, where private desire, cultural taboos and social media algorithms collide in the same space.  It also echoes an idea expressed by Esther Perel: “Desire needs space, not fusion.” In a world increasingly shaped by technology and autonomy, the question becomes how intimacy evolves when that space changes.

The impulse came when I received a sex machine from the brand UPKO. When I opened the box, I felt a strange shiver and immediately thought about the iconic scene from Sin City that questions whether technology can replace the dynamics of intimacy between people. That moment sparked a wider reflection about autonomy, pleasure and how technology is reshaping modern intimacy.

The project touches several parallel tensions. Female sexuality is still constantly restricted and moderated on social media platforms. At the same time, sex toys remain culturally taboo despite the fact that their popularity and demand are rapidly growing. More and more women are openly exploring their own pleasure independently from romantic relationships, and sociological studies increasingly show a decline in women’s interest in traditional partnerships with men.

The work is not meant to provoke. It is rather an observation of a cultural shift. The space was intentionally stripped of distractions. The setting is minimal and almost sterile, creating a clean visual field where textures and materials become central elements. Latex, reflective surfaces and strong directional lighting build the atmosphere.

The styling references bondage aesthetics and incorporates iconic symbols of erotic fashion such as Agent Provocateur and Christian Louboutin. These brands function here as cultural symbols of sexuality, power and desire rather than simple fashion elements.

What should the viewer pay attention to?

The tension between sterility and sensuality. The glossy surface of latex, the mechanical presence of the device and the minimal space create a dialogue between technology and the human body. It becomes a visual metaphor for contemporary intimacy. The biggest challenge was navigating the boundaries imposed by social media censorship. The project exists within a paradoxical environment where female sexuality is widely present in culture yet constantly moderated, restricted and flagged by digital platforms. This tension became part of the narrative of the work itself.

My work often explores themes of female identity, sensuality and the aesthetics of power. This project continues those themes but expands them toward technology, autonomy and the future of intimacy. It is a point where fashion, sexuality and sociology intersect and start speaking the same visual language.
