JOUISSANCE x La Camionera: A Fragrance That Opens Like the Night
Inside the intimate London launch of La Camionera Eau de Parfum, a collaboration shaped by literature, queer culture, community and the lingering memory of a great night.
Some fragrances are designed around a particular ingredient. Others attempt to interpret a person, a memory or an imagined world.
The latest release from London fragrance house JOUISSANCE takes a different approach. Created in collaboration with La Camionera, the community funded lesbian bar and cultural space in Hackney, the fragrance presents an olfactory portrait of a living place.
La Camionera Eau de Parfum is not simply inspired by the interior of the bar. It attempts to capture its wider emotional atmosphere: the dim red glow, the closeness of conversation, the movement of people through the room and the intoxicating sense that the night might continue indefinitely.
HUMBLE attended the fragrance launch in London, where the atmosphere reflected the spirit of the collaboration itself.
The event felt genuinely friendly and relaxed. Guests moved easily between conversations, drinks and introductions to the perfume. The drinks were excellent, but the most memorable part of the evening was the sense of warmth within the room. It did not feel overly formal or carefully staged. Instead, it felt social, intimate and welcoming.
It was the kind of environment in which a fragrance could be experienced naturally, not only on a testing strip, but while surrounded by people, conversation, music and the changing atmosphere of the evening.
An Olfactory Portrait of La Camionera
The fragrance was created by Cherry Cheng, founder and Creative Director of JOUISSANCE.
Cheng developed the perfume through an ongoing dialogue with La Camionera co owners Alex and Clara. Instead of responding to the work of a single writer or artist, as JOUISSANCE had done with its debut collection, the creative process focused on a place that is continuously shaped by the people who enter it.
This makes La Camionera an important development for the fragrance house. Founded in London, JOUISSANCE creates perfumes informed by literature, female creativity, erotic imagination and the interior lives of women. Its debut collection, launched in 2024, drew inspiration from writers, artists and fictional characters who challenged conventional ideas surrounding fantasy, pleasure and desire.
The brand’s name refers to the idea of pleasure that exceeds conventional boundaries. Its perfumes approach fragrance as an expressive art form, combining traditional perfumery with compositions intended to evolve, provoke and occasionally unsettle. With La Camionera Eau de Parfum, the house moves from interpreting an individual creative figure towards documenting a contemporary cultural space.
The collaboration is particularly fitting because both JOUISSANCE and La Camionera understand culture as something collective. It is created through literature, art, film, scent, conversation and the everyday encounters that allow communities to form.
A Strong Beginning
On first application, La Camionera Eau de Parfum is strong. The fragrance arrives with confidence and considerable intensity. Its opening does not feel quiet or restrained. The citrus, spice and sweetness appear almost simultaneously, creating an immediate and assertive impression.
However, this first encounter does not represent the complete fragrance. Give it approximately 20 to 30 minutes and the composition begins to change. As the initial intensity settles, the individual elements become easier to recognise. Smaller details start to emerge, with different notes moving forward and then disappearing back into the composition.
This gradual development is where the fragrance becomes most compelling. Bergamot, sweet orange and lemon introduce brightness, while cinnamon, cardamom and nutmeg create a dry, heated layer of spice. Marzipan brings a softer and more nostalgic sweetness, connecting the sharper opening to the floral heart beneath it.
Lavender, Egyptian jasmine and violet slowly become more noticeable as the fragrance warms on the skin. The jasmine gives the perfume a sensual depth, while the violet introduces something softer and more atmospheric.
The base brings together sandalwood, vanilla, tonka bean, opoponax, patchouli, synthetic castoreum and musk. These notes create a darker and more enveloping finish, gradually replacing the force of the opening with warmth, intimacy and closeness.
The perfume does not reveal every part of itself immediately. It asks for time. What begins as something powerful and direct gradually becomes layered and nuanced. After half an hour, it is possible to recognise the smaller hints within the composition and understand how the sweeter, floral, spicy and musky elements interact.
The Importance of Marzipan
During the development process, Alex and Clara asked for the fragrance to feel sweeter.
JOUISSANCE had previously gravitated towards more classical compositions, but the collaboration presented Cheng with an opportunity to explore gourmand notes more directly. Marzipan became the element that transformed the perfume.
Its almond like sweetness brings softness and familiarity without turning the composition into a conventional sugary fragrance. Instead, it adds an almost nostalgic warmth that complements the jasmine, vanilla and spices.
The result feels richer and more intimate.
There is something comforting within the dry down, as though the intensity of the evening has begun to soften into memory. The fragrance retains its sensuality, but it becomes less confrontational and more enveloping as it develops.
This progression mirrors the experience of a night out. The beginning is energetic and immediate. Later, individual moments become more distinct: a particular conversation, the smell of the room, the warmth of another person or the final drink before leaving.
Fragrance as Cultural Documentation
La Camionera is more than the physical location represented by the perfume.
Based on Well Street in Hackney, the community funded venue was created as a space for London’s queer community and visitors from beyond the city. Its identity is formed through the people who gather there, the conversations that take place and the creative culture surrounding it.
The fragrance does not attempt to reproduce the bar literally. Instead, it interprets its emotional qualities. It suggests candlelight, red smoke, silver surfaces, warmth, conversation and the electricity of a room filled with possibility. It is less concerned with documenting exactly what the space smells like and more interested in how it feels to be there.
This is where the collaboration becomes culturally significant.
Independent fragrance can operate as a form of documentation. A perfume can preserve an atmosphere that cannot be fully captured through photography or writing alone. It can hold an impression of a particular place, community and moment in time.
For JOUISSANCE, working with the people and spaces shaping culture is a natural continuation of the brand’s creative philosophy. La Camionera expands its storytelling beyond the printed page and into a real, evolving community.
The Memory of a Great Night
La Camionera Eau de Parfum succeeds because it does not remain static.
Its first impression is forceful, but patience reveals a more complex fragrance beneath the surface. The citrus becomes softer, the spices become warmer and the florals begin to move through the composition before settling into woods, vanilla, tonka bean and musk.
It changes according to time, skin and proximity.
Like the bar that inspired it, the fragrance feels most alive when experienced around other people. It is confident enough to be noticed but becomes more intimate the closer someone comes.
La Camionera Eau de Parfum is priced at £60 and launched on 30 July 2026. It is available through the JOUISSANCE website, directly from La Camionera and through selected international retailers.
It begins strongly, but the real character of the perfume appears later.
Give it time, allow it to settle and the smaller details begin to reveal themselves. What remains is warm, strange, sensual and difficult to separate from the memory of the night around it.
