A.W.A.K.E. MODE

Skin-pink leather; liquid-like and tightly belted. Vinyl cigarette pants cut backwards. Evening gowns pulled entirely apart, reconstructed and safety-pinned back together. Heavy winds of protection, provocation and perversion blow through Natalia Alaverdian’s imagination. As is the cornerstone of the label, a knowing tension between what A.W.A.K.E.’s heroines choose to reveal and conceal is the central plotline.

Across skin-tight ribbed jersey and serpentine knits, chests are slashed. Necklines lower and skirt slits rise - for nobody but the wearer.

Only with an understanding of construction, and the female form, as masterful as Alaverdian’s can silhouettes prowl the boundaries of sex and solemnity quite like this. With total agency over their desire and their ability, this season’s muses are makers, demonstrators and educators.

Crushed velvet, Elizabethan necklines, turbo-sized outerwear – almost spherical. Alaverdian looks to times and places both rich and bleak: the raw visual language of raves rendered in Trainspotting; weird romance in the Scottish Highlands. Settings for brilliant, difficult women with strange stories to tell.
