Fam Irvoll: The Original Partymonster Returns to London
Twenty years into her career, Norwegian designer Fam Irvoll returns to the London club culture that helped shape her maximalist universe.
For SS27, that history becomes part of the collection itself.
Fam Irvoll has never fitted particularly comfortably within the familiar idea of Scandinavian restraint. Colour, humour, exaggerated form and handmade detail have instead defined a practice built around fashion as character, fantasy and self-expression.
Presented during London Fashion Week with Fashion Scout, Original Partymonster looks back to Irvoll’s years within early-2000s London club culture and, specifically, the world surrounding BoomBox, the East London night where fashion, music and extreme self-invention collided.
Rather than recreating that period literally, Irvoll pulls its attitude into the present. Sportier silhouettes meet bold prints, sculptural 3D elements and the deliberately excessive visual language that has become central to her work.
The connection is personal.
Irvoll studied at ESMOD Oslo and Central Saint Martins, developing her practice during a period when London nightlife offered an alternative fashion education of its own. Clothes could function as performance, social code and an immediate declaration of identity. That idea still sits naturally within her work.
Her current collections move between dresses, recycled denim, mesh, embroidery and handmade statement pieces, while SS27 also expands the Fam Irvoll universe into jewellery, earrings and accessories.
There is craft beneath all the noise. Irvoll has consistently championed handmade construction, an approach visible in the embroidered surfaces, tactile embellishment and dimensional elements that prevent her maximalism from becoming simply graphic.
Twenty years into the label, Original Partymonster feels less like a nostalgic return than a reminder of where a distinctive visual identity can begin.
At a moment when fashion aesthetics can spread globally almost overnight, Irvoll’s work makes a case for something more individual: clothes developed from lived references, personal obsessions and the freedom to be visually excessive. Perhaps the original partymonster never really left.
