Although Arte Nova was founded in 2019, its roots trace back to 1956, beginning with visionary Portuguese goldsmith José Martins Barbosa. In a time when Portugal was still largely closed off to the world, he became the first Portuguese goldsmith to import machinery for jewellery-making, without even knowing a single word of another language. That determination to innovate understood as both courage and curiosity helped shape the future of Portuguese jewellery.
Barbosa did not stop at importing equipment. Recognising that true progress requires autonomy, he began building his own custom machines, many of which remain in use today. His pioneering spirit drove major growth, including a period where the factory operated non-stop, 24 hours a day, in three shifts, responding to soaring demand. The foundation was set early: boldness, creativity, precision, and a belief that craftsmanship should evolve rather than stand still.
With his retirement, the second generation took over. A new factory was built to double production capacity, and the company saw growth through partnerships with Portuguese wholesalers while continuing to develop new models and techniques. In 2014, the third generation joined the business, bringing a renewed creative vision that opened the brand to new markets and set the groundwork for direct-to-consumer offerings.

In 2021, the Porto store opened, strengthening the house’s physical footprint. In 2022, major retail partnerships followed, including El Corte Inglés in Portugal, TK Maxx in the United States, and Winners in Canada. Since September 2025, Arte Nova has been available at Nordstrom, marking a new chapter in international recognition and global stage visibility.
